In 2014, Google launched Android Wear – which has since become Wear OS. However, unlike smartphones, where the company has not hesitated to launch its own devices, the Nexus and Pixel, Google has so far refused to design its own smartwatch.
It seems that this will finally happen and that the Google Pixel Watch is planned to be launched in the coming months. Indeed, many rumors indicate that Google and designed its own watch to intertwine its own ecosystem. It has to be said that in recent months, Google has become a major player in the smart watch industry. Not only has the company partnered with Samsung to merge Wear OS and Tizen, but Google has also acquired one of the world’s leading smartwatch manufacturers: Fitbit.
Therefore, this first Made by Google smartwatch should have been designed in partnership with the Fitbit teams. Known under the codename “Rohan”, it will however be a watch launched under the Google Pixel brand and equipped with the manufacturer’s operating system: Wear OS.
Google Pixel Watch – Design
Although the Pixel Watch has been rumored for a few years, things really picked up speed last April. Leaker Jon Prosser announced that he got his hands on “tons of photos” of a Google-designed watch codenamed Pixel Watch. To protect the source of these images, the leaker commissioned 3D renderings of the watch’s design.
These 3D renderings revealed a smartwatch with particularly thin screen edges that extend over the contours of the case. The watch, as shown, would also have its own wristband attachment system, similar to what Apple offers with the Apple Watch.
Google Pixel Watch – Hardware
So far, information is still pretty scarce about what hardware the Google Pixel Watch will offer. Business Insider reported in early December that the watch has a heart rate monitor and offers basic health-tracking features such as step counting. These are traditional features for a smartwatch or bracelet at this point, and it’s not yet known if the Pixel Watch will allow for blood oxygen saturation (SpO2), ECG or even blood pressure measurement.
While Qualcomm was until now the main – if not the only – processor supplier for Wear OS 3 watches, Google has apparently decided to turn to Samsung to design the chip for its watch. Last May, Max Weinbach mentioned that Samsung would offer Google a 5nm processor for the Google Pixel Watch. This information was confirmed in late December by 9to5Google.
Google Pixel Watch – Price and release date
In April, Jon Prosser was particularly optimistic about Google’s marketing plans, predicting an announcement sometime in October 2021, along with the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. It wasn’t to be. According to Android Police, the Pixel Watch will simply be announced this spring at Google I/O. As for the price, we still have no information to back that up.
