Canada has opened its doors to millions of skilled immigrants through Canada Express Entry. Aspiring applicants must submit detailed applications online. What documents do they need and when?
Document Checklist for Canada Express Entry
A Canadian immigration applicant must gather certain documents soon after deciding to apply. One may need information from some of the documents during the application process. After receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA), the candidate has 60 days to submit all documents.
Some of the documents are mandatory, but others will depend on an individual’s particular situation. Here is a list of nine types of required documents:
1. Identity documents
The applicant must provide their current and valid passport as well as those of their family members. The visa office uses these documents to verify identity. It is also necessary to present documents in support of the marital status indicated on the profile.
These documents may include any of the following:
- Common-law union form
- Marriage certificate
- Divorce certificate
- Formal separation agreement
- Death certificate (widow)
When declaring children as dependents, the applicant must provide the following:
- Birth certificates for biological children
- Adoption certificate for adopted children
2. Language test results
Fluency in French or English is a requirement for express entry to Canada. Candidates must submit their test results as proof of their language skills.
3. Medical examination reports
Applicants must submit their medical reports and those of their family members after receiving an invitation. A medical examination close to the date of submission can ensure that they remain valid after arrival in Canada.
4. Police certificates
Certifications must be obtained from each nation in which an adult has resided for at least six months. All adult family members must have a criminal record certificate.
5. Educational certificates
Applicants must produce academic certificates as proof of completion of the study programs they have listed. Foreign certificates may have to go through academic credential assessment to be assessed by the Canadian government.

6. Work experience documents
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) wants to ensure that individuals have worked for the employers listed and for the time period listed. Proof of work experience may include the following:
- Contracts
- Letters
- payslips
Individuals can prove their work experience in Canada by providing tax records.
8. Proof of Funds
Applicants must show that they have the minimum bank account balance to support themselves and their families. IRCC chooses the amount from the checklist each year.
9. PCP Certificate (Provincial Nominee Program)
Candidates with provincial nominations must submit their certificates. The certificate adds an additional 600 points to their Express Entry profile.
10. Proof of Canadian job offer
People with a job offer in Canada score higher in the Comprehensive Ranking System. They must demonstrate that the job offer is legitimate using the following:
- Letter from employer with company contact information and job description.
- LMIA number if employment is based on LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment).
