OneDrive is Microsoft’s mainstream cloud storage platform where users can save almost anything they want. One might suspect that it is mainly used to save photos and documents. Apparently save Word documents to OneDrive can sometimes be a hassle, well, it’s annoying, to say the least.

Apparently, when users attempt to save Word documents to OneDrive, they are quickly greeted with an error message stating: ” This is not a valid filename“. This only happens when the file is opened from OneDrive to be saved in a different folder. Whenever the file is saved in the same folder, everything works fine. So as it stands, the problem only shows its ugly head when attempts are made to save the files to a separate folder.

OneDrive does not save Word documents

Fixing this issue won’t take very long to be honest. Just follow the steps correctly and everything should be back to normal in no time. Keep in mind that since you’re using OneDrive, an internet connection is required at all times.

This is not a valid filename

From what we gathered, the reason for not being able to save documents has a lot to do with the 259 character limitation when creating and saving files regarding Office products.

There is a workaround for this, and as such we are going to discuss it in detail right now.

1]Rename the file with a shorter name

To do this, right-click on the file and then select Rename from the menu. After that, just type the new name and then press Enter button on your keyboard to complete the task.

2]Rename the folders containing the files

OK, so the same is required here. Right-click on the folder, then find Rename and make the necessary changes. Hit the Enter key and continue from there.

3]Move the file to a folder with a shorter path

When it comes to video files from OneDrive, it’s not the same as doing it locally on a Windows 10 machine. Users will need to right-click and then select the Move to option. .

Finally, find the folder to accept the move, select it, then click the button that says Move to complete the action.

4]Make changes from the document

The next option now is to open the document and then change the name from there. Finally, hit the File tab, select Save As, then browse to the correct folder before hitting the Enter key.
