Many Microsoft owners Surface book have experienced GPU issues in the past two months. For some strange reason, the computer no longer detects the GPU, and that’s never a good sign. The GPU inside the Surface book comes from NVIDIA.
Surface Book not detecting NVIDIA graphics card
If you encounter this problem, you must first Update the system. You can download the latest update by going to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Finally, click Check for Updates and wait for everything to download and install. You will need to restart your computer.
“When Surface updates are delivered through the Windows Update service, they are delivered in stages to Surface customers. Therefore, not all Surfaces will receive the update at the same time, but the update will be delivered to all devices. If you have not received the update, please manually check Windows Update later.
Once you’ve updated your Surface, follow these steps.
1]Change power settings
Launch the Settings app by clicking on the Windows key + Ithen select System > Power & Sleep. From there you need to scroll down to ” On battery, turn off after ” and ” Once plugged in, turn off after » and choose Never in the drop-down menu.
This should force the Surface Book to run at its best possible performance.
2]Detach and reattach the Surface Book
So the next step is to open Device Manager. Do this by right clicking on the Start buttonthen selecting Device Manager in the list that appears.
Finally, unplug your Surface Book. Make sure it’s fully charged, as it’s not ideal for your battery to run out before the end.
Detach the tablet section of the keyboard and wait up to 15 seconds for the system to update the connected devices. During this time, the Device Manager screen should flash several times, so keep an eye out for that.
Now reattach the tablet to the keyboard and wait for the Nvidia graphics card to appear in Device Manager which should still be on the screen. The next step is to shut down the computer normally, but make sure that at this point the Nvidia graphics card is still visible in Device Manager.
After the Surface Book is turned off, you should now perform a hard reset of the Surface device. Keep in mind that performing a hard reset can potentially delete all files on your computer, therefore, you should back up all important content before proceeding.
A hard reset is performed by pressing the volume up button and the power button for at least 20 seconds. Keep in mind; you have to press the volume up button first before you press the power button.
Chances are you’ll see the UEFI system. If it appears, just exit the system and let it reboot into Windows 10.
This should help fix the Surface Book 2 GPU not being detected issue. We’re sure that at least one of these options should fix the problem. If not, there is a deeper problem with the GPU that is unrelated to what most people have experienced.
